This evening, I am posting a short video clip of a memorial stone erected by William Bowman in memory of his wife Jane Gunning Geates who died June 22nd 1878 age 26 years. Being January light conditions were poor.

Wingate Ancestry Glasgow Scotland

This evening, I am posting a short video clip of a Wingate memorial stone located at Eastwood Old Cemetery, Glasgow. Regrettably, the video quality is poor because (a) the memorial stone has been vandalised and lies recumbent in pieces and (b) poor light conditions were aggravated by tree cover.

Some of the inscription is legible and records the deaths of:

  • Walter Wingate on March 13th 1889 age 56 yrs.
  • Walter's wife, Susan Gatherer on Dec 21st 1905 age 66 yrs
  • Sarah Wingate on March 26th 1919 age 46 yrs

Stewart Ancestry Gorbals Glasgow Scotland

This evening, I am posting a video clip of a memorial to Walter Stewart, a flesher (butcher) of Glasgow who died November ( day/date not clear) 1812 age 55 years. The stone was erected by Walter's sister,Mary Stewart, in his memory.

The memorial is located in the Rose Garden, Gorbals.

Wallace Ancestry Paisley Scotland

This evening, I am posting a video clip following my visit to Paisley, near Glasgow.

This shows a grave-marker in the grounds of Paisley Abbey and records James Wallace, his wife Margaret Blair and their children. The inscription is dated 1770 but it is not clear precisely what this date alludes to.

Wilson Family Ancestry Gorbals, Glasgow Scotland

This evening, I am posting an video clip of a Wilson family memorial located at the Rose Garden in Glasgow's Gorbals area.

This records the deaths of:

  • 'Campbell' daughter of John Wilson who died April 28th 1824 age 28 yrs. An unusual name for a female!
  • John Wilson, Session Clerk of Gorbals, who died Jan 13th 1839 at 64 South Portland Street, Glasgow.

William Gibb Ancestry Gorbals Glasgow Scotland

This morning I re-visted the Rose Garden in central Gorbals, Glasgow. In the 18th and early 19th centuries this area was 'upsacle' and home to wealthy business people and professionals.

The Rose Garden is now a public park the perimeter walls of which are embedded with various memorial stones which may suggest the park was previously a churchyard or cemetery.

The first video provides an 'overview' of the Rose Garden whilst the second video focuses on a memorial to William Gibb, a spirit dealer/merchant, who died Nov 1827 age 77 years.

This records the deaths of:

  • Rev. William Gardiner, Minister of Original Secession Congregation, Pollockshaws who died May 26th 1908 age 71
  • Henry Niven Gardiner who died Dec 13th 1904 age 36.
  • Hannah Niven, sister-in-law of Rev. William, died Feb 5th 1890
  • Jeanie Niven, wife of Rev.William, died Jan 18th 1911 age 73
  • Jane Ramsay Gardiner, daughter of Rev.William, died May 11th 1958.
  • Margaret J. Baikie, Nurse, who died Feb 10th 1908.

Edmiston Family History Glasgow Scotland

Today, I am posting an image of a gravestone from Eastwood Old Cemetery, Glasgow.

This was erected by William Fleming Edmiston in memory of John Edmiston, his wife and children. WFE was nephew of JE.

The inscription specifically records the death of James Edmiston, son on John, at Lochinch on Jan 9 1841 age 78. Also, James's wife, Mary Pollock, also at Lochinch on Feb 5th 1841 age 79.

Robert Wodrow Ancestry Glasgow Scotland

Today, I am presenting a short video of a memorial to the Rev Robert Wodrow which is located in Eastood Old Cemetery, Glasgow, Scotland.

This gentleman was Minister of Eastwood Kirk and "faithful historian of the sufferings of the Church of Scotland 1660-1688".

Rev Wodrow died March 21st 1734 age 55 yrs-and in the 31st year of his ministry.

George Thomson Ancestry Glasgow Scotland

This afternoon, I am posting a video image of a Thomson family memorial from Glasgow's Southern Necropolis (near to the Gorbals).

George Thomson was an engineer and shipbuilder of Glasgow who died June 29th 1866 age 51 yrs.

The inscription records that four of his children ( May, John, Edith and William Rodger) plus his grandchild, George, all died in infancy.

George's wife, Elizabeth Rodger, died June 27th 1898 age 76 years.

John Robertson Ancestry Glasgow Scotland

This morning I visited the Southern Necropolis near Gorbals Glasgow. This is a fascinating cemetery containing memorials to wide range of wealthy and important people, mainly from the early 19th century when Glasgow was expanding rapidly as an industrial centre.

The video clip below show a recent memorial to John Robertson, an engineer who was born Dec 10th 1782 and died Nov 19th 1868. This man was responsible for the engine of the 'Comet' 1812 which was the first steamboat that plied regularly in Europe.

This evening, I am presenting an image of a family memorial plaque from Oakshaw Trinity Church, Paisley.

This records the death of:

  • Margaret Buchanan, wife of Robert Menzies, who died Aug 6th 1807 age 35 years.
  • Seven children who died between 1802 and 1841.
  • Robert Menzies Senior who died Aug 24th 1843 age 82 years.
  • Margaret Buchanan who died Feb 12th 1854.

Sillars Family Ancestry Glasgow Scotland

This morning, I visited Glasgow's Necropolis (city of the dead) where I encountered this interesting memorial to the Sillars family which is in memory of:

  • Ralph Sillars, merchant of Glasgow, who died June 30th 1860 age 35 years.
  • Margaret Mackay, wife of Ralph, who died March 21st 1867 age 30 yrs
  • Jessie Sillars, sister of Ralph, who died Dec 25th 1871 age 36 yrs
  • Agnes Wallace, mother of Ralph and husband of David Sillars, who died March 15th 1872 age 68 yrs.
The inscription on the stone is badly eroded and barely legible to the eye.

This records the death of James Brown, Uncle of Andrew Brown, who died at Funchal (Madeira island, Portugal) on Feb 22nd 1787.( Maybe the deceased was involved in the wine trade?)

Earl of Elgin & Kincardine Ancestry Glasgow

This morning I visited Eastwood Old Cemetery, Glasgow, Scotland and took a short video clip of this fascinating and historic burial ground. The video provides an overview of this well kept cemetery. At the end the camera focus on a box like building which appears to be the mausoleum for members of the Earl of Elgin & Kincardine's family.

A plaque records that Thomas, Earl of Elgin & Kincardine, had a daughter, Harriet Maxwell who died August 21st 1857. Harriet was the wife of Sir John Maxwell. The inscription is in poor condition.

This evening, I am presenting a very old, 18th century memorial plaque from Oakshaw Trinity Church, Paisley.

This memorial was established by Thomas Calderwood and Mary Rule in remembrance of John Calderwood, brother of Thomas, who died May 12th 1795 age 18 years.

Adam Boyd Ancestry Paisley Scotland

This evening, I am posting an image of a memorial to Adam Boyd (manufacturer of Paisley) and Agnes Orr his spouse and their children.

This plaque can be found in the cemetery of Oakshaws Trinity Church, Paisley.

The inscription is dated March 1st 1800 but the significance of this date relative to the deceased family is not clear.

This evening, I am posting an image of a tombstone from Oakshaw Trinity Church, Paisley. This churchyard contains interesting grave markers dating to the 18th century.

This stone records Donald Wright, Vintner in Paisley, and his spouse Margaret Graham. The stone is dated 1791 but what specific date this signifies is not clear.

This afternoon I visited a fascinating graveyard at Oakshaw Trinity Church, Paisley, near Glasgow. This holds a collection of very old grave markers dating back to the late 18th century.

This stone simply records the names John Dalglish and Janet Aitken (husband and wife) and is dated 1790.
