Macmillan Ancestry Tour Scotland

This evening, I am posting a record of a Macmillan themed ancestry tour which started and ended in Glasgow.

Macmillans have their origins in Knapdale in the West of Scotland. Castle Sween (below), possibly the oldest castle in Scotland, boasts a Macmillan tower. Close by is the Kilmory churchyard in which can be found the 12 ft Macmillan cross, an elaborately carved 15th century monument inscribed 'Haec est crux Alexandri Macmillan'. An image of this cross can be found immediately below.

The Macmillans lost control of the lands of Knap which were purchased in 1775 by Sir Archibald Campbell of Inverneil.

An interesting and rewarding tour in magnificent countryside.

Barclay Ancestry Paisley Scotland

This evening, I am posting a video clip of a very old memorial stone from Laigh Old Kirk, Paisley.

To read the inscriptiuon I first had to scrub away years of accumulated moss. Being recumbent this stone does not drain and so makes a good growing environment for moss.

This stone records that ownership rests with Robert Barclay, Merchant in Paisley and his family.

Specifically, it records the deaths of:

  • Robert Barclay on July 31 1831 age 71 yrs
  • Jane Moody, wife who died Aug 18th 1841 age 80 yrs.
This couple probably achieved double the average life expectancy for that era.

Orr Ancestry Paisley Scotland

This afternoon I am posting a video clip of a Orr family memorial from Leigh Old Kirk, Paisley.

To read the inscription I first had to clear a heavy layer of moss so this is the first time this memorial has been available to read for many years.

The recumbent memorial is very old and reads:

"This Burial Place is appointed for (Bn?) William Orr and his spouse and their children and grandchildren 1781."

I don't understand the Bn abbreviation which I have placed in brackets. Comments/suggestions will be welcomed.

McEuen Ancestry Paisley Scotland

This evening, I am posting a video clip of a very old tombstone located at the burying ground close to Paisley Abbey. This records the deaths of:

Daniel McEuen, Wright and Margaret Adie, spouse and children. The inscription is dated 1788 but it is not clear to which, if any, of the individual deceased persons it relates.

NB: The name of the male deceased could be either:

  • Daniel McEuen ( a wright or craftsman) or
  • Daniel McEuen Wright
Taking onto account the symmetry of the inscription and the fact it was common at that time to provide occupation of the deceased I have elected for the former.
