This afternoon I am posting information on Lowndes family as sourced from a plaque in historic Paisley Abbey. This records the deaths of:

  • James Lowndes of Arthurlie on July 27th 1813 age 69.
  • Katherine Lowndes on Oct 24th 1815 age 62 years.
It appears that the Lowndes were a wealthy/important local family as there are a number of memorials to the family in Paisley Abbey.

Lowndes is an Old Norse name meaning groves or woods and appears to emanate from northern England (Staffordshire and Cheshire).
